TMD & FMR beyond the teeth
3 days conference OCT 3,4,5 2025
Lukas Lassmann & Davis Thomas
Day 1
1. Understanding Orofacial Pain & TMJ
part 1 - What prosthodontist should know (Lukasz) 9:30 - 10:45
What is pain? How can a dentist correctly diagnose orofacial pain and assess whether it is treatable? How does the source of pain differ from the location of pain?
How to conduct an interview with a patient suffering from pain.
Disc pathology - how to differentiate it and when intervention is necessary
How to distinguish between locks of muscle and articular origin Synovial pain map of the temporomandibular joint
Radiological picture of disorders of the temporomandibular joint How to examine the temporomandibular joint

2.Occlusal Philosophies - In Search of a Common Denominator (Lukasz) 11:00 - 12:30
- How has the approach of occlusal philosophies changed in terms of tooth guidance and its impact on bruxism TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders)?
- The impact of improper occlusion on TMD- correlation or causative relationship?
- Complicated Relationships between Anterior and Condylar Guidance and Their Clinical Implications” (Lassmann et al.)
- Sagittal condylar guidance angle measurement methods: A systematic review” (Lassmann et al.)
- Is the use of fully adjustable articulators and a facebow really necessary to achieve proper prosthetic reconstruction?
- Controversies regarding centric relation from the perspective of diagnosis and therapy.
- In search of a common denominator between different occlusion philosophies.
- What are the limitations of articulators, and can we truly design prosthetic reconstruction that never require adjustment in occlusion?
12:30 - 13:30 - Lunch
3.Understanding Orofacial Pain & TMJ
part 2 -perspective from pain expert ( Davis Thomas)
13:30 - 15:00
• Scope of OFP
- Orofacial pain encompasses a wide variety of conditions and diagnoses that affect the craniofacial structures. These include acute and chronic pain entities. The major subclasses of diagnoses are myofascial, neuropathic, neurovascular, headaches, autoimmune conditions, amongst others.
• OFP classification- The guiding light in this is the International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP). • TMD classification
- We will discuss a simplified classification appropriate for clinicians, other than DC-TMD and RDC-TMD.
• Differential diagnosis
- We will discuss the major diagnoses based on cases
• Overview of management modalities
- A summary of management modalities with a focus for TMDs.

Day 3
10. Holistic approach - what should we know to avoid troubles (Lukasz) 9:00 - 10:30
Rare and idiopathic conditions in a dental office - what have we learned ?
How to recognize what caused the destruction of teeth?
The influence of cervical vertebrae (C1-C2), tongue, body posture and sleep apnea on joint and bite disorders - a curiosity or a standard of treatment? Controversies in the world of science.
Sleep apnea and dental treatment- How to diagnose OSA with polygraph and drug induce sleep endoscpoy? Is increasing VOD detrimental for apnea? Modern approach to OSA treatment in dental profession.
Adaptation - what is it, what are its effects, how to recognize if the patient is already adapted and how to treat in cases of aesthetic and functional reconstructions.
11. Vertical Occlusal Dimension mythology and severe attrition treatment. (Lukasz) 11:00 - 12:30
Vertical occlusal dimension - what are the limitations ? Should we be „that” precise ? Bite registration in severe wear cases
What is the ferule effect and which part of the tooth is the most important? Biomechanics of damaged teeth
